Some DHCP Options are not recognized on a Windows XP SP3-based client computer when the DHCP server offer includes option 43

Hi Guys,

Have you encountered any problems with Windows XP Service Pack 3?

This service pack was recently released by Microsoft and it caused some connection problems. DHCP problems to be exact. It seems that the computers could no longer grab an IP address automatically and would definitely drop the internet connection from the router.

I've tried checking and researching the problem and found out that it's already a known issue with microsoft.

Some DHCP Options are not recognized on a Windows XP SP3-based client computer when the DHCP server offer includes option 43

Article ID : 953761
Last Review : June 23, 2008
Revision : 2.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You have Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)-based client computers in a network environment.
In this network environment, you configure a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server to offer DHCP option 43 (for Microsoft vendor-specific options).

In this scenario, some DHCP options are not recognized on the client computer.

This problem makes some services fail. These services include the time server service and the Network Policy Server (NPS) service. Additionally, this problem also affects some third-party options.

If you run the ipconfig /all command to view the TCP/IP configuration when this problem occurs, some fields may become empty. These fields include the DHCP Server field and the Primary WINS Server field.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when option 43 does not appear at the end of the option list in the DHCP packet.

A Windows XP SP3-based client computer assumes that option 43 will always appear at the end of the option list. Therefore, the client does not parse any DHCP options that appear after option 43.

Service Pack 3 issue

I have had issues connecting to the internet after downloading sp3. Then after uninstalling and restarting I can connect. Anyone else experiencing any similar issues w/ sp3? I believe I pulled a good IP the whole time. Kinda tough to download the hotfix when you can't get online...
